Would eating hamburgers for every meal be healthy? Why or why not?

2 V. Nutrition As teens, your nutritional habits are key to your development. Today we will discuss the 6 major nutrients and in a few days we will prepare healthy snacks that are nutritious and delicious.

3 1. Carbohydrates A.Come from starch and sugar in foods and
supply the body with energy 1.Starch A.Bread B.Cereal C.Rice D.Pasta E.Potatoes 2. Sugar A.Sugar B.Sweets (cakes, pies & cookies) C.Soft drinks D.Candy

4 2. Protein A.Helps build and repair body tissues such as muscles.
B.Food sources - 1.meat (beef, pork, chicken, etc…) -2. eggs - 3.dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese ,ice cream) - 4.beans - 5.nuts

5 3.Fats A. As a nutrient it helps store fat soluble vitamins and can be used as reserve energy. It also helps to cushion and insulate the body. B. Food sources -1. Meat & Eggs -2. Dairy -3. Fried foods - 4.Junk food

6 4.Vitamins A.Help fight illness and disease as well as help maintain body functions. B. Food sources - 1.fruits - 2.vegetables - 3.juices -4. milk (vitamin D is added) - 5.sun

7 5.Minerals A.Help to build strong bones, teeth, tissues (skin) and fluids (blood) B.Food sources 1.milk and dairy products– calcium 2.liver - iron 3.bananas - potassium 4. fruits and vegetables

8 6. Water A. Aids with digestion and helps transport other nutrients through out the body. B.Food Sources 1.Water 2.Tea/coffee 3.Soft drinks 4.Juices 5.Fruits and vegetables

10 7. Dietary Guidelines With all the thousands of food choices out there, how do you know which items will give your body the nutrients you need? A.To help you make this decision, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services have given us a set of guidelines. B.The Dietary guidelines offer six main recommendations for good health.

11 8.Eat a variety of foods. A. No one food group is more important than another. B.For good health eat foods from each food group. These food groups are 1.Fruits 2.Vegetables 3.Grains or breads 4.Meat 5.Milk 9.Balance your diet with exercise to maintain a desirable weight. A.Being overweight can contribute to lifestyle diseases such as: 1.High blood pressure 2.Heart disease 3.Stroke 4.Diabetes 5.Certain kinds of cancer. B.Being too thin can also be a problem. 1.Not eating enough to meet your body’s energy and nutrient needs.

12 10. Choose foods with plenty grains, fruits & vegetables.
A.These foods provide adequate starch and fiber. B.Fiber is the undigested part of plant foods that helps with digestion. 11. Choose foods that have low fat and low cholesterol A.High fat and high cholesterol foods cause lifestyle diseases and obesity. -1. Avoid fried foods - 2.Trim fat from meat

13 12.Limit your sugar intake. 13.Limit foods high in sodium.
A. Too much sugar causes tooth decay (cavities) B.Too much sugar can also cause you to be overweight. 1.Unused sugar turns to body fat. 13.Limit foods high in sodium. A. Sodium is the same thing as salt. B. Sodium causes: 1.High blood pressure 2.Retaining body fluids
