Global Land Component Biophysical Variables Ground Based Observations for Validation Hot-Spot Monitoring Sentinel-2 Global Mosaics DG JRC – entrusted entity M. Cherlet, M. Clerici, N. Gobron, A. Brink, JF. Pekel, Z. Szantoi
2
Global Land Component concept
Downstream applications Core applications for land monitoring Hot Spot monitoring packages Thematic data products Analysis Ready Data Biophysical variables Contextual info 20m 100m 300m 1km Moving to: Higher resolution global land products On-the-fly processed products Application oriented integrated products Transparent access and use of products
3
Portfolio of the Biophysical Variables now completely in production
21 type products 3 resolutions 80+ data collections
4
Ground-Based Observations for Cal-Val
5
High Resolution Hot Spot Monitoring
Land cover/change maps and related indicators over specific Areas of Interest Complements the near real time global monitoring service at low resolution CAR_01 Carribbean (ACP) Area 96,823 km2 LCCS level B CAF_05_Garamba_addition Area a 17,819 km2 Area b 11,540 km2 EAF_04_Niassa_Selous Area 139,166 km2 SAF_21_Madagascar Area 124,015 km2 WAF_04_Wapok Area 57,777 km2 20 Key Landscape zones Total area: km2

Compositing period (day, 10-day, month, quarter, year)
Sentinel-2 Global Mosaic allows users to tailor products with respect to Compositing period (day, 10-day, month, quarter, year) Area of interest File format (GeoTIFF, JP2, NetCDF) Spatial resolution (10, 20, 60m) Coordinate system (WGS84, UTM) Bands to be included Auxiliary information (AOT, geometry, scene classification, etc.) Sentinel-2 data volumes and permutations of options make traditional approach of full-archive processing, storage, and distribution prohibitive. Instead: on-the-fly processing upon user request! 60m, Annual mosaic 2017
8
Two Compositing Algorithms
Short-term composite < 5 valid observations: Decision-tree approach evaluating scene classification, similar to Landsat WELD MEDOID > 4 observations: Multidimensional median on entire spectrum Rigid pre-processing to eliminate invalid observations Generating mosaics pixel by pixel from original observations, no spectrum averaging or other image blending applied Spatial resampling of bands to non-native resolutions if needed
9
Ordering S2GM products via Mosaic Hub
On-request generation of tailored mosaics leveraging on cloud resources and S2 L2A Mosaic Hub as an interactive user interface Website and desktop application with convenient download manager
10
Tailoring & Requesting
Dialogue-based Mosaic specification
11
Download User area lists all requests
Download manager ensures convenient and robust distribution
12
Analysis Ready products
Three file formats: jp2, GeoTIFF, NetCDF INSPIRE-compliant Accompanied by extensive metadata (xml, json, NetCDF Metadata) Atmospherically corrected, quality controlled, fixed grid, fixed periods Example: Exploit stack of S2GM products with Python’s xarray

Summary Copernicus Sentinel-2 Global Mosaic service
Congo (QA4 2018) Copernicus Sentinel-2 Global Mosaic service provides scientifically sound mosaics of Sentinel-2 surface reflectance data on a global scale is fit for various applications is free to use by everyone is accessible via and via CLMS is operated by a team of dedicated experts ready to support users Global Data Next Month
17
Evolution of the Global Land component of the Copernicus Land Service
Baseline existing portfolio is maintained but further harmonized into vegetation, water, cryosphere products all products at Sentinel-3 native and/or higher spatial resolutions maintain and enhance the ‘application ready’ type products, such as phenology, land productivity (300m or higher) and the S2 GM New Services near real time high resolution land (cover) change alert system thematic land layers (including status, changes, derived statistics on seasonality dynamics (inter and intra-annual variability) at S2 resolution: Wetlands Grassland Forest (e.g. related to REDD+ needs), occurrence and changes Natural vegetation (integrates parts of the above) Agriculture Urban areas: human settlements and population mapping products (see annex) Surface water occurrences and trends

20
GLOBAL LAND COMPONENT and SDGs
Global mapping of when and where of inland coastal waters at 30m, 32 years, to be adapted to S2 Land productivity Dynamics, 1km, 15 years (moving to 300m, 18 yrs) GEO request to Copernicus for support to GEOGLAM Global Human Settlement Layer 20m – 1km, spatial-temporal evolution of the built-up surfaces and the population living there
