1 Photosynthesis Notes

2 Breakdown the word: Photosynthesis

3 A) Photosynthesis 1. the process by which plant cells use energy from the sun to make food a) autotroph: an organism that makes its own food 2. occurs in the organelle CHLOROPLAST, which contains the pigment chlorophyll (green)

4 Examples:

5 The Photosynthesis Equation
GOES IN (Reactants) Comes OUT (Products) Words Carbon Dioxide + water Carbohydrate+ oxygen Chemical Equation CO2+H2O C6H12O6+O2

6 B) The Photosynthesis Process
1)it requires LIGHT 2) the type of carbohydrate plants make is GLUCOSE, it’s a sugar; formula? (C6H12O6) 3) carbon dioxide enters through small holes in leaves called STOMATA 4) water enters through ROOTS 5) Oxygen leaves through the STOMATA 6) plant will use the glucose as energy for respiration

7 Plants to bacteria textbook page 145

8 C) Xylem (zi-lem) Xylem are strong, thick tubes.
They carry water and minerals from the plant's roots to its leaves.

9 D) Phloem (flowm) Phloem are thinner tubes than xylem.
They carry the glucose made in photosynthesis to where it is needed as energy. Sap usually comes from the phloem Sap from a sugar maple tree is used to make real maple syrup

10 Where is the xylem in this image?
Where is the phloem in this image? What does this show you about each?
