Subject Area: Models and Measurements
EQ: How do we appropriately collect data, and display data? Questions: How are models used in Earth science? What are the limitations of models? What is the importance of the international system of units?

Is the Worldwide temperature increasing?
What would happen if the temperature rose only a few degrees? Rotting remains would increase adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. There would be more rain due to the increase of evaporation. Sea levels would rise flooding all cities that are at or below 8m above sea level. Much of the sea ice near the poles would melt. One way scientists study global warming is by making models.

Types of Models Models are representations of objects or systems. 1. Physical Model - Models that you can touch 2. Mathematical models - Made up of mathematical equations and data. 3. Conceptual Model - Composed of many hypotheses that have been tested through the Scientific Method Partner Question: What is the difference between a physical model and a conceptual model?

Measurement It is important to use the International System of Measurements so you can compare your data to that of other scientists. Length is in meters Volume is in liters Mass is in grams Temperature is in Kelvin Partner Question: Why do you need to use the international system of measurement?

Review Game There will be several teams. I pick the numbers.
You will have a choice of a Fill in the Blank question that is worth 3 points or a true false question that is worth 1 point. If you answer without help from your group you will get a bonus point. If a team is talking then or an answer is shouted out then there will be points taken away from your team. If the team gets the question wrong I will pull a number and that person will have the opportunity to answer the question. If they get it right then the team get the regular points if they get it wrong then the team get minus one point. This person does not have to answer the question. The team with the most points will get three “Maverick Bucks”, second will get two, and third will get one for each member of the team.
