2 Quote A piece of information you take directly from an article you read and put it in your essay. YOU insert the quotation marks! Not just quotes in the article you read!!! Other peoples’ words…NOT your own words

4 Paraphrasing Your own words You have to change the quote significantly
Not just a couple of words…yes, we can tell. You still site where you got the information Otherwise it’s plagiarism!!!

5 Quote when you can't say it any better than they did, but paraphrase when you can.

6 How to cite a source WITH A QUOTE:
Put the information in quotation marks. DO NOT include punctuation yet Put the author’s last name in parentheses after the quote. Put the punctuation AFTER the parentheses!

7 Example for a quote: “Eighty-nine percent of all teenagers believe that their parents don’t remember what it’s like to be a teen” (Jackson).

8 How to cite a source USING A PARAPHRASE:
Change the wording of the info. DO NOT use quotation marks!!! When you finish your paraphrase, DO NOT write the punctuation Include the author’s last name in parentheses Then write the punctuation.

9 Example for a paraphrase
Most teenagers think their parents just don’t understand them (Jackson).
