1 6X Wednesday Objectives: Describe complex urban societies that existed in Mesoamerica and North America before 1500. Agenda: Do Now: Locate and mark the following civilizations on your map (in do now tray): Maya, Aztec, Anasazi, Hohokam, Cahokia, Hopewell. Cut and paste your map into your notes (under today’s Do Now section) Investigate Primary Source Documents Homework: What can you tell about the civilization that built the pyramids we investigated in class? Please write an A+ answer.

Conclusions/ things you can infer from the picture There are at least two very big buildings in this picture. They can hold a lot of people. It also takes a lot of people to build something like this. These must have been used to hold a lot of people. This civilization must have had a lot of people. BG Knowledge: The Mayans and Aztecs built structures like this Maybe these are the Mayans or Aztecs? The buildings are big. These are probably important buildings. There are a lot of trees in the background. This civilization probably hunted in the woods. A lot of green land Farming! Farming is necessary to support a large population. Buildings made of stone They must have mined. Skilled at mining and moving heavy stone. A lot of ruins A very old civilization The longer building looks like an arena or coliseum This civilization must have had community events – community focused. One of the buildings on top of the pyramid looks like a temple Maybe they really valued religion? One of the buildings looks like it has a lot of rooms Housing? Lots of people? Community? There is a building on top of the pyramid This might be an important building because it is higher than other buildings and can see more. This could also help with city planning or defense A lot of people  There had to be a government These buildings are separate from smaller buildings This must have been important These buildings are made of stone Defense or long lastingness or protection from weather or fires These buildings are large and elaborate They must have been very intelligent and skilled in physics, Math, architecture, geometry Government: Smart, organized, care about the people, powerful and strong Traded to get things, wealthy – lots of money and resources, slaves? HW: What do we know about this civilization based on the pyramids? Write an A+ answer. Use your notes. Due tomorrow. Final form in your notebooks.
