What are the seven Deadly Sins?
The Catholic Church divides sin into two categories Venial sin: forgivable, lesser sin Anger at a friend, swearing, lying about your homework, stealing a candy bar Mortal sin: a serious offense that creates the threat of eternal damnation (going to Hell) Murder, spousal abuse, grand theft auto Most of the seven deadly sins are mortal sins

Lust Latin term: Luxuria, meaning ‘extravagant’
Generally identified as sexual wants but can be desire for anything (money, fame, power, etc.) Sexual desires within marriage are okay, but outside of marriage or adulterous desire is bad

Gluttony Latin term: Gula, meaning ‘to gulp’
Overindulgence, usually of food or drink, but can also be with wealth items Like too many shoes or TVs

Greed Also called “Avarice” Latin term: Avaritia, meaning ‘to covet’
The desire to possess wealth or goods far beyond the basic needs of survival “I only really need one car, but I have the SUV for weekends, the Porsche for special occasions, and the Corolla for everyday.”

Sloth Latin term: Acedia, meaning ‘negligence’
Laziness, especially when a person is ignoring what God has spoken Not working for the good of society or to protect and provide for a family Apathy: the state of indifference where there is no interest about something

Wrath Latin term: Ira, meaning “rage”
Anger, uncontrollable feelings of hatred Suicide is thought of as a kind of wrath, as anger towards the self

Envy Latin term: Invidia, meaning “envious”
Resentment when a person lacks another person’s perceived superior qualities or possessions and wants to have it Different than jealousy! Jealousy is the fear of losing something you have to someone else Your boyfriend or girlfriend wanting another person makes you jealous. You wanting the boyfriend or girlfriend of another person makes you envious

Pride Latin term: Superbia, meaning “arrogance”
Desire to be more important or attractive than others, or the overinflated sense of one’s own status or accomplishments Considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins Lucifer was proud of himself and wanted to compete with God; this caused his fall from Heaven and transformation into Satan
