2. Directions
Step 1: Study each photograph for a couple of minutes to form an overall impression, and then examine specific details about the people, objects, environment, and actions depicted. Jot down those elements that you find most compelling.

3. Step 2: Describe your emotional and intellectual responses to the photos. What does each one make you feel? What does each one make you think? What does each one make you want to do?

4. Step 3: Analyze the effect that these photos would have had on the people of the time. Consider the viewpoints of the black South Africans, the Afrikaners, and people (black and white) outside of South Africa.
