1 Phonics screening check

2 "The phonics screening check is a short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. The phonics check will help teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2. The check comprises a list of 40 words and non-words which the child will read one-to-one with a teacher.“ (Department for Education)

3 ONLY 6 WEEKS TO GO When is the phonics screening check?
Week commencing Monday 11th June 2018 Follow up week- 18th June ONLY 6 WEEKS TO GO

4 What happens in the test?
The children will be shown 40 words, one at a time. The words will include real words and pseudo words (Alien words). They can use ‘fred talk’ (segmenting the word) C-A-T and they can repeat this as many times as they like. and then they need to blend to say the word= CAT. As long, as the children say the word correctly they get the answer right.

6 The threshold mark will be available from Monday 25th June 2018
What do the children need to get to pass? The threshold mark will be available from Monday 25th June 2018 Last year the children had to get 32/40, so the threshold should be similar this year. You will be told how your child did, but schools’ results will not be published. If your child’s score falls below the standard, they will be given extra phonics help and can re-take the Phonics screening check in Year 2.
