2 Mr. Zhao is checking for Story Map: Annie Jump Cannon
Story Map: Independent Research Your third source (Print or other media)

3 Warm-Up: Wednesday, November 5
PAGE 250 Objective: To strengthen the narrative elements of the research paper. Question: Imagine that your essay is like the Powerpuff Girls. It has sugar, spice, and “everything nice,” but what is the missing component Chemical X?

4 Expanding the Rough Draft
Context: In order to integrate the narrative and dialogue better, we will be doing a fun activity with scenes from Cosmos.

5 Expanding the Rough Draft
Instructions: Each member at the table has been given a card, and each card has a suit. Depending on which suit you have, you will write a narrative from a certain perspective. Hearts-Annie Jump Cannon Diamonds-Cecilia Payne Clubs-Third Person Limited Spades-Third Person Omniscient

6 Expanding the Rough Draft
Each of the two scenes has dialogue provided for you. It is your job to provide specific details about what the characters are doing, thinking, and feeling. Use adjectives, adverbs, literary devices, and strong nouns and verbs in your narration.

7 Scene One: Cecilia Payne Comes to Harvard

8 Scene Two: Cecilia Payne Proposes her Theories

9 Expanding the Rough Draft: Independent Research
Instructions: Take the next ten minutes to pick out two scenes in your rough draft that have or need dialogue and do the following: Brainstorm adjectives, adverbs, strong nouns and verbs to go into your narration. Using these words that you have brainstormed above, write a scene that includes dialogue (in “quotations” or italicized form). Include as many details as possible in these scenes.

10 Adding Literary Devices
Instructions: Using the narrative scenes that you have generated in your Expanding the Rough Draft activity, you will now add literary devices to make them even more FUN to read.

11 Adding Literary Devices: Independent Research
Instructions: Take the next ten minutes to revisit the scenes that you wrote about in Expanding the Rough Draft and do the following: Come up with three literary devices that you want to use for each of the two scenes. Write out three sentences that use the three literary devices. Incorporate some of these into your rough draft for tomorrow, you DO NOT have to use all of the literary devices that you create.

12 Source Three: Activities
Source Three: Annotated Bibliography (Page 255) Instructions: Do the following for source three. Read each source and highlight important dates, events, names, and places. In bullet points, write out the relevant details under each source’s citation. Write a short 3 sentence summary of the source. Source Three: Five Step Process (Page 256) Instructions: The following activity will be based upon the third source that you found on your own. Students will chunk the readings into five different pieces and give them a title. Students will then write a short one to two sentence summary of what each chunk says. Now finish the third column using your Character Portrait as a guide to fill out the third column.

13 Due Tomorrow STEM Research Paper Peer Review
