3 CAUSES OF UNEVEN DEVELOPMENT
DISCOVER THE Physical, Economic and Historical causes for uneven development EVALUATE which you feel has the greatest impact on uneven development SUGGEST some links between different factors

4 Key Definitions – match the key word to the definition
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY ECONOMICS HIC NEE LIC TRADE COLONIALISM WEALTH OF AN AREA OR COUNTRY THE NATURAL FEATURES, SUCH AS CLIMATE AND RELIEF OF AN AREA HIGHER INCOME COUNTRY NEWLY EMERGING ECONOMY LOWER INCOME COUNTRY BUYING AND SELLING OF GOODS AND SERVICES BETWEEN COUNTRIES ACQUIRING FULL OR PARTIAL POLITICAL CONTROL OVER ANOTHER COUNTRYAND EXPLOITING IT ECONOMICALLY Challenge: Write down examples of HIC, NEE, LIC countries, physical geography, a colonial country and trade.

The most landlocked countries on Earth are in Africa. This means a country is only boarded by land. With no access to the seas, a country is cut off from seaborne trade, which is important for economic growth.

7 Climate related disease
Tropical Africa, South America and Asia have more climate related diseases and pests then cooler parts of the world (such as mosquitoes which can spread malaria) Disease affects the ability of the population to stay healthy enough to work. Climate related disease

8 Extreme weather such as cyclones, droughts and floods, often hits tropical regions – Africa is particularly badly affected. An extreme weather season can slow development and it can be costly to repair damaged infrastructure.

9 The lack of adequate supplies of safer drinking water is a barrier to economic development. People can waste several hours each day walking to collect water, poor irrigation limits the development of commercial faming, clean water is essential to ensure good health and enable people to work effectively.

Its main trading partner is Switzerland (45% of exports) The price for copper has fluctuated a lot since With a HDI of 0.39 Zambia is described as having ‘low human development’ Tasks: Describe the trends in world price for copper (using graph D). What impact does this price in copper have on the Zambian economy? Challenge: Explain the link between trade and the development gap (4 marks)
