2 The fruitless tree CONTEXT: - Travelling from Bethany back to Jerusalem and Jesus is Hungry - While this text speaks primarily to Israel, there is also a word of warning here for all people. - The Lord Jesus wants us all to know that He is examining our lives. He wants us to know that He is looking for genuine spiritual fruit in our lives. - When He finds that fruit, we are blessed. When He does not find it, there is a high price to pay.

Some Facts About The Figtree: Third Tree to be mentioned in the Bible In Roman times figs were considered to be restorative. They were believed to increase the strength of young people, to maintain the elderly in better health and to make them look younger with fewer wrinkles. –Pliny ( AD). The fig tree is a symbol of abundance, fertility and sweetness.

5 THE FRUITLESS TREE LET’S LOOK AT THE TEXT:
IT WAS NORMAL FOR JESUS TO THINK THAT THERE WOULD BE FRUIT. HE FINDS NOTHING AND CURSES IT. WHY DOES HE DO THIS? - THE TREE PROMISED SOMETHING IT DIDN’T OR COULDN’T DELIVER! -HYPOCRISY – “ONE WHO WEARS A MASK”

6 FRUITLESS TREE ARE WE HYPOCRITICAL IN OUR WALK?
- LET’S LOOK AT JOHN 15 - THE LORD WILL BRING JUDGEMENT UPON US. - NOTICE VERSE – “ DRIED UP FROM ROOTS” - Usually, when a tree “dries up”, it does so from the top down. The root system will be the last part of the tree to die. Not this tree! Jesus cursed it and it died from the roots up. It is a picture of total destruction!
