Teaching speaking Aims:
To notice how different people are motivated to speak by different interests To reflect on the range of speaking opportunities available to students during a lesson and how these can be exploited usefully by the teacher To learn how to plan a speaking lesson (incl. skill focus, aims and structure) (optional) To practise designing and presenting a grammar-oriented speaking activity

What gets you speaking? giving opinions stating personal preferences
What functional language did you practise while doing the task? giving opinions stating personal preferences What expressions or ‘language chunks’ might be useful to students when performing the task? ‘Actually,…’ ‘For me,…’ ‘I prefer… to…’ ‘Generally…’ ‘It depends on…’ ‘I really like…’ ‘I’m not keen on…’

Think of as many reasons as possible as to why students might open their mouths and say something during a lesson! 3 minutes only

Reasons why students may speak during a lesson
1) Practical Speaking: When students use language authentically during the lesson as a part of their real world experience E.g. “Can I go to toilet?” “Your chair is on my foot.” “I’m boring today!” 2) Feedback to Teacher: Either to a practice activity or to teacher elicitation to confirm that students have been working appropriately E.g. “Number 3… I think is B.” “My partner say me she can’t play musical instruments.” 3) Metalanguage Questions: When students ask us (or tell us) about how to use the language E.g. “Why can’t I say: ‘I shaved my face this morning.’? It is bad grammar?” “How you say – do or make mistake?” 4) Pair Comparison: When students work in pairs to compare their answers to an exercise E.g. “No, the woman on cassette she say that she don’t like football, I think.” “What you write for number 6?” 5) Speaking Practice Exercises: When the teacher asks the students to speak to improve their speaking ability E.g. Students describe the members of their family to each other: “I have two brothers, one is old me. Other is young. How many you have?”

Planning a speaking lesson
Discuss in pairs: What specific speaking skills can we focus on? How should we describe the aims? How should we structure a (e.g. 40 minute) speaking lesson?
