Beginnings At first, the Santa Fe region was occupied by native people. In 1609 an expedition up northern New Mexico yielded a colony, Santa Fe. In 1610, Santa Fe became the capital of New Mexico.

Gaining Control The Spanish had much resistance from the Native Americans living there. A revolution in the 1600s led to Pueblo Indian occupation of Santa Fe. An estimated 16% of Spanish Colonists died in the revolt.

Religion During the 1600s over 14,000 Pueblo Indians were converted to the Catholic Church. Many missions were set up as an extension of Spanish rule. This however, did little, the Natives still practiced their “Pagan” beliefs.

Capital of New Mexico In 1610, right after its creation, Santa Fe was deemed the capital of New Mexico. When New Mexico became a state in 1912, Santa Fe remained its capital.

Impact On History Santa Fe was an outpost of the Spaniards northern advancement. It was a place to refuel going north when exploring.

Population Santa Fe’s population has increased from about 2,500 in 1610 to about 62,000 in 2000 to 68,000 in 2010, a change of 59,500 and 6,000. Santa Fe is currently the second largest city in New Mexico

Today Today Santa Fe is still the capital of New Mexico.
They are the second largest in the city in the state.
