1 Quick Question: Carefully complete both sides of the wave worksheet on your table.

2 Today’s Objective: I can identify and explain the behavior of waves.

3 Fill the tray with 500 ml of water
from a beaker.

4 Place the tube in the water at one end of the tray.
Slowly rock it back and forth with your fingers. This will allow you to observe plane waves.

5 Slowly rock it back and forth with your fingers
Slowly rock it back and forth with your fingers. This will allow you to observe plane waves. Sketch a picture to scale of the wave tray and the waves you create.

6 Place a rectangular barrier in the center of the tray
Place a rectangular barrier in the center of the tray. Gently create waves. Observe what the waves do when they reach the barrier. Sketch another picture of the wave behavior showing what happens when it reaches a barrier.

7 Fill the small cup up with water
Fill the small cup up with water. Set it inside near the middle of the tray. Roll the tube back and forth. Draw another scaled picture showing the behavior of the wave as it approaches a smaller barrier.

8 Place 2 rectangular barriers in the tray so there is a gap of about 2 cm between them as shown.
Make plane waves with the tube. What do the waves look like after they pass through the gap? Draw a picture of the tray and waves.

9 Use the eye dropper to drop a drop of water into the center of a tray with no waves. Record the pattern of the waves created. Try to represent the amplitude and the wavelength as accurately as possible. Sketch your waves.

10 Now drop a small marble into the center of a tray with no waves
Now drop a small marble into the center of a tray with no waves. Record the pattern of the waves created. Try to represent the amplitude and the wavelength as accurately as possible. Sketch your waves.
