3 October 2014 Do now: Read “Europeans participate” on pg. 76 and answer the following question in a min. of 3 lines: Why do you think the antislavery King Affonso and others were ignored by both Africans and Europeans? Today, I will understand how slave trade expanded to the “New World.” I will discuss the hardships that Africans dealt with on the Middle Passage. Homework: Newton and Falconbridge accounts of the Middle Passage create 2 discussion Qs per reading. Movement of people: Voluntary and Involuntary Movement of Ideas: Cultural Diffusion, occurs via interaction with new people. Movement of goods: Imports and Exports.

Why does African enslavement increase?
New European colonies are being established globally. There’s a need for a permanent labor force. The more colonies that are established the more wealth is generated, thus the need for more slaves. African slavers are profiting greatly and receiving European goods in exchange for slaves.
