2 5 STAGES OF THE WRITING PROCESS
Turn to your neighbor and see if you can recall the 5 main steps to the writing process…

3 The Five Steps Include:
•PREWRITING •DRAFTING •REVISING •EDITING •PUBLISHING

4 Step One: Prewriting Prewriting is the starting point AND includes all activities/strategies that prepare an author to write

5 PREWRITING STRATEGIES:
FREE WRITING CLUSTERING/MAPPING/WEBBING BRAINSTORMING IDEA LISTING REHEARSING

6 Step two: Drafting Drafting is when you begin the actual writing During this step, you should not worry about spelling, grammar, capitalization, or punctuation

7 Drafting Look at your timeline and decide on 3 main TOPICS to elaborate on when writing your autobiography Below are examples: TOPIC One: Parent Guidance TOPIC Two: Life obstacles TOPIC Three: Achievements

8 3 Topics On a sheet of paper, write these 3 TOPICS and list under each TOPIC all the ideas/events from your timeline that fit under each TOPIC TOPIC one: Parent Guidance When and where you were born and who your parents are Where you first lived How your parents earned a living and more information about your first years of life

9 5 Paragraph Autobiography
Drafting: Write the second paragraph about everything on topic one Write the third paragraph about everything on topic two Write the fourth paragraph about everything on topic three What will paragraph 1 and 5 be? Introduction and Conclusion paragraphs

10 Step Three: Revising Revising follows drafting and includes adding, deleting, rewriting, and polishing During this step, you may move back through drafting and prewriting several times

11 Topic sentences Topic Sentence
A sentence at the beginning of a paragraph that tells the reader what the paragraph will be about (1 paragraph)

12 Revising 1. Look at paragraph 2 to see if you have a topic sentence.
EXAMPLE Topic Sentence: City to city and state to state is the life of a military brat, but with the guidance of my parents, I made it through. 2. Check to make sure you have 3 supporting sentences for that topic sentence. EXAMPLE of a Supporting Sentence: My journey as a military brat began on December 30, 19…. in Knoxville, Tennessee. 3. Check to make sure you have a concluding sentence as the last sentence in your paragraph. EXAMPLE of a Concluding sentence: As you can see, my life journey has included several people, places and things.

13 BODY PARAGRAPH FOR TOPIC 1
TOPIC SENTENCE: City to city and state to state is the life of a military brat, but with the guidance of my parents, I made it through. Supporting Sentence 1: My journey as a military brat began on December 30, 19…. in Knoxville, Tennessee. Supporting Sentence 2: I was born the youngest of 3 children. Supporting Sentence 3: Our family moved all over the United States and overseas to Japan but we always remained a close knit unit because of my parents support and guidance. CONCLUSION SENTENCE: As you can see, my life journey has included several people, places and things.

14 Revising Look at paragraph 3 to see if you have a topic sentence
-Check to see if you have 3 supporting sentences -Check to see if you have a concluding sentence

15 Revising Look at paragraph 4 to see if you have a topic sentence
-Check to see if you have 3 supporting sentences -Check to see if you have a concluding sentence

16 For each of your body paragraphs (P2,P3, P4):
Labeling For each of your body paragraphs (P2,P3, P4): Circle and label the topic sentence T.S. Underline and label the supporting sentences S1,S2, S3 Circle and label the concluding sentence C

17 Writing a Thesis Statement
A statement that clearly expresses the author’s opinion on the subject and can be argued and supported with evidence --Tells the reader what the entire writing will be about --More than one paragraph (example: 5 paragraph essay)

18 INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH (P1)
Thesis Statement (does not always have to be the first sentence) EXAMPLE: Throughout my life the guidance of my parents, my perseverance through many obstacles, and my achievements have landed me at where I am today. 19 INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH (P1)
THESIS : Throughout my life the guidance of my parents, my perseverance through many obstacles, and my achievements have landed me at where I am today. 1. Introduce TOPIC one: PARENT GUIDANCE EXAMPLE: I have been around the world and met many people, but there is not anyone who can take the place of my parents. 2. Introduce TOPIC two: LIFE OBSTACLES Life will always throw you curve balls, but it is what you choose to do with those curve balls that determines your future. 3. Introduce TOPIC three: ACHIEVEMENTS My life hasn’t been easy, however setting goals and making it a point to achieve them is what helps build a better future.

20 Introduction Paragraph (P1)
THESIS: Throughout my life the guidance of my parents, my perseverance through many obstacles, and my achievements have landed me at where I am today. Supporting Sentence for Topic 1: I have been around the world and met many people, but there is not anyone who can take the place of my parents. Supporting Sentence for Topic 2: My life hasn’t been easy, however I made it a point to persevere. Supporting Sentence for Topic 3: Setting goals and working hard to achieve them is what helps build a better future. CONCLUSION SENTENCE: Life is an ongoing journey that requires guidance, perseverance, and the setting of goals to build a bright future.

21 INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH (P1)
4. Write a conclusion sentence, basically restating your thesis statement EXAMPLE: Life is an ongoing journey that requires guidance, perseverance, and the setting of goals to build a bright future.

22 CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH (P5)
1. Have a topic sentence that sums up everything you have talked about in paragraphs 1-4 (you can say your thesis statement in a new way) EXAMPLE If it wasn’t for my parents, my determination, and the drive I have to do well, my life may have played out differently.

23 CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH (P5)
. Write a supporting sentence(sums up what you talked about) topic 1: PARENT GUIDANCE EXAMPLE: Several people have impacted and changed my life, but it is my parents guidance that ultimately has stuck with me.

24 CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH (P5)
3. Write a supporting/concluding sentence about topic 2: LIFE OBSTACLES EXAMPLE: If I didn’t make mistakes and learn from them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

4. Write a supporting/concluding sentence about topic 3: ACHIEVEMENTS EXAMPLE: I’ve always worked hard and had the end in mind, just like the saying “keep your eye on the prize.”

5. Write a sentence that sums up what you have written so far in this conclusion paragraph and make sure it supports your thesis statement. EXAMPLE: Throughout my journey, I am thankful to have a strong family support, a sense of purpose, and the willpower to accomplish my goals.

Step Four: Editing Remaining The Editing stage is the final preparation for publishing. corrections of mechanics are made The writing piece is put into its finished form More revision can still be made at this step (when needed)

29 Publishing refers to the sharing of writing with someone
Step Five: Publishing Publishing refers to the sharing of writing with someone For students, this most often is teachers, peers, parents, or the public It may also include submiting material to magazines, newspapers, or newsletters

30 What does the T stand for?
T stands for Topic (Ask yourself: What are you writing about?)

31 What does the A stand for?
A stands for Audience (Ask yourself: Who will be reading your writing?

32 What does the P stand for?
P stands for Purpose (Ask yourself: Why are you writing)

33 What does the F stand for?
F stands for Format Ask yourself: Are you writing a letter, poem, essay, short story, etc.)
