1 Sci Fi / Fantasy Lit November 5-6, 2015
Hello and welcome and Happy! Today’s agenda: Read “The Night Wire” Visualizing a short story Writing description. .

2 Terms to remember Ambiguity: when things are unclear
Uncanny Valley: something that looks and feels normal, but is off in some way. Cognitive Dissonance: Discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradicting beliefs.

3 “The Night Wire” In this story, H.F. Arnold uses ambiguity in a different way; there is a voice in the story relaying events in real time to the narrator which he is not experiencing firsthand. Therefore, the reader is left with strange and mysterious images and a feeling of uncertainty as to whether or not they actually exist in the story’s world. As we read “The Night Wire,” I want you to visualize what is happening with each news drop. Beneath each illustration, write the quote you are referring to.

4 Twilight Zone “The Living Doll”
We are now going to watch a classic Twilight Zone episode. You are then going to have to write a description of a scene, so pay close attention to when the father forces the doll into the vice grip in the garage and threatens it with a blowtorch.

5 Now, I am going to give you a storyboard from the film
Now, I am going to give you a storyboard from the film. I want you to write a paragraph of the story. I am looking for details that create a sense of terror or suspense. For help, try to focus on at least one of the three ways to create terror: Ambiguity: when things are unclear Uncanny Valley: something that looks and feels normal, but is off in some way. Cognitive Dissonance: Discomfor experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradicting beliefs.
