DNA DNA replication – DNA function – Triplets / codons
2
3.5.6 – The Genetic Code L.O: to recap DNA knowledge from BIOL2
Starter: A B C
3
DNA DNA replication – helicase breaks H bonds, free nucleotides join and binded together with polymerase. DNA function – DNA codes for all proteins (all enzymes are proteins!) and protein synthesis happens in ribosomes Triplets / codons – three bases in a sequence codes for a specific amino acid. The linear sequence of amino acids (primary structure) creates a specific protein.
6
Features of RNA: It has a ribose sugar Uracil replaces thymine
It is single stranded (un-equal ratio of bases) It is short-lived
7
Key Features of the Genetic Code
v It is universal – same triplets used in ALL organisms to code for SAME amino acids It is non-overlapping – each triplet is a separate code It is degenerate – each amino acid is represented by more than one triplet, so more tolerant to mutations
8
Bingo! Choose 9 of the following words to write in your 3x3 grid:
Helicase, polymerase, uracil, guanine, cytosine, adenine, thymine, pentose, nucleotide, universal, non-over lapping, degenerate, base triplet, amino acid, ribosome, nucleus, hydrogen bonds, single polynucleotide chain, double polynucleotide chain
