2. Before we show you what we do, here is what you can do…
Encourage a positive mindset in Maths.
Tell them how good they are. Let your child know that they have unlimited maths potential and that being good at maths is all about working hard.
Explain how much you enjoy the subject.
Always be encouraging and never tell them they are wrong when they are working on maths problems. Instead find the logic in their thinking. For example if your child multiplies 3 by 4 and gets 7, say – Oh I see what you are thinking, you are using what you know about addition to add 3 and 4, when we multiply we have 4 groups of 3…

If you are worried about confusing your child with a different method when supporting your child with home tasks, use our calculation policy on the school website to support you child with home learning.
Encourage your child to play Maths games and puzzles.
The next two slides have a list of apps and websites you and your child may enjoy.

8. Let’s look at addition…
Over the last half term we have been learning about addition in maths. We teach the children different methods to use when adding two numbers together. The main methods that we focus on are…

12. Activity
Partner 1 rolls the dice. The number they roll is the number of counters needed, or the starting number for the number line. Partner 2 rolls the dice. They need to add this number to Partner 1’s number or do the correct amount of jumps on the number line. Can you use all three methods to add two numbers together?

13. Greater Depth
When a child is ready to move on to the next step, we give them a maths monkey challenge. These challenges allow the children to apply the knowledge they have gained in a different way. This encourages the children to think ‘out of the box’ and use their initiative.
