The Manhattan Project There was a fear that the Nazi’s would develop and use an atomic bomb on the US. There were 30 sites across the country that were working on development of a nuclear device. The final testing location was Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Lead Scientists/Engineers
Robert Oppenheimer Was the lead researcher for the development of the atomic bomb. After the creation of it he worked hard against the use of it in war.

Trinity Test Trinity was the code name for the final test of the atomic bomb in New Mexico.

Fat Man and Little Boy Fat Man Little Boy

Enola Gay B-29 Super Fortress Piloted by Paul Tibbits. It was named after his mother. It dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima.

Hiroshima Little Boy explodes and destroys 70% of Hiroshima, causing 90,000 immediate deaths and as many as 166,000 within the first four months after the bombing.

Nagasaki Originally the bomb was to be dropped on Kokura, Japan. Cloud cover redirected the plane to Nagasaki Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan killing almost 80,000. It missed it’s target by 2 miles.

The End After threats of continued use of atomic weapons on Japanese cities. Six days later the Japanese government accepted an unconditional surrender ending World War II.
