(Intersection of Allenwood-Lakewood Road & Newton’s Corner Road)
Define the Problem (Intersection of Allenwood-Lakewood Road & Newton’s Corner Road)
2
-Too many car accidents are occurring at this intersection.
UNDESIRABLE SITUATION An undesirable situation (effect) exists at this local intersection. What do you think it is? -Too many car accidents are occurring at this intersection. Since the approach here is reverse (back) engineering, it may be sensible to consider what the undesirable situation is, but the undesirable situation is typically provided.
3
POSSIBLE CAUSES There is usually a cause to every undesirable situation (effect). What do you think is the cause of the undesirable situation (effect) at this intersection? -Drivers are not seeing the stop sign early enough as they approach the intersection. -Drivers approaching from south and west have not seen a stop sign or traffic light in a few miles and may not be expecting a stop sign.
4
ENGINEERING PROBLEM Based on the cause of this undesirable situation (effect), engineers needed to figure out what they need to do about the cause. What they want to do about the cause is known as the engineering problem. What do you think they identified as the engineering problem? -Develop a traffic sign that drivers will easily notice/see as they approach the intersection.
5
CRITERIA In order for a solution to an engineering problem to be successful, it has to meet certain requirements. These specific requirements are know as criteria. What do you think were some criteria in place when developing the solution to the this engineering problem? -Must blink to draw attention to it -Must have a self-generated power supply
6
CONSTRAINTS When developing solutions to engineering problems the engineers do not have free reign. In other words, there are certain limitations or constraints that they have to deal with. What do you think were some constraints that had to be considered when developing the solution to the this engineering problem? -Has to meet traffic sign guidelines -Low cost -Uses readily available technology/materials -Must be developed in a timely manner
7
SCIENCE Engineering requires the application of science in order to develop successful solutions to engineering problems. What do you think were some scientific ideas that needed to be considered when developing the solution to the this engineering problem? -Energy types and conversions (light to electrical) -Electromagnetic spectrum (visible light) -Electronics (LED bulbs) -Forces and motion (speed and stopping time) -Nervous system (brain/body reaction time)
