1. What is an Enzyme? Enzymes Define
A protein that acts as a chemical catalysis Function Speeds up chemical reactions using less energy than without the use of an enzyme Enzymes What does it look like? A lock-and key model Special Feature There is a specific enzyme for every chemical reaction that takes place within an organism
3
Enzyme Parts Enzyme – protein that acts as a catalyst
Substrate – the “chemical reaction” the enzyme works on Active Site - the specific region of the enzyme which combines with the substrate Product – the outcome of the enzyme action

3. Enzyme Action What is an Enzyme Substrate Complex?
In a chemical reaction, the step where a substrate binds to the active site of an enzyme Watch the following video clip:

4. Energy Use With & Without an Enzyme

5. Factors that Affect an Enzyme
Temperature’s Affect on Enzymes Temperature – all enzymes have an optimum temperature at which they perform pH - extreme changes in pH can cause enzymes to denature making them unable to function Enzyme concentration – increase the rate of reaction only until substrate is used up Substrate concentration – will only have an affect if it is a limiting factor; meaning it is stopping a reaction from occurring pH’s Affect on Enzymes Watch the following video:
