Pre-AP English II November 8, 2017
Consider the following from Philip Larkin's poem, "Church Going" Once I am sure there's nothing going on I step inside, letting the door thud shut. In your journal, answer the following: 1. What feelings are evoked by the word thud? 2. How would the meaning change if the speaker let the door slam shut? Make a 2-column chart. In one column you will write verbs which express the closing of a door. In the other column you will write the feeling evoked by the verb. Write at least 3 verbs.

Objectives Students will continue working on style analysis. They will look at good and bad examples of AP Style Analysis essays. Using the AP grading rubric, they will give each essay a grade and a reasoning for the grade before seeing what the grade on the essay was.

Sample AP Style Essays Take about 10 minutes, read through the three AP Style Essay examples. Using the scoring guide you were given, assign a score to each essay and include your reasoning for the score. Be sure and be specific with your reasoning. We will then look at the scores assigned by the AP readers when the essays were submitted.

Homework Complete the “connotative and denotative” worksheet. These questions are pretty straight forward. You shouldn’t have any trouble, but if you do have questions, please come to tutorials or see me after school and I will answer them. Begin thinking about which story you’d like to use for your style analysis essay. You may use “Harrison Bergeron,” “The Lottery,” or another short story of your choosing.

Tomorrow we will… Begin working on our own style analysis essays.
