9 Intellectual Exchange
The process of sharing/giving ideas and or academic knowledge. Ex. The Muslims learned the art of papermaking from the Chinese. With that information they innovated it by bounding books (History Alive! The Medieval World and Beyond 113).

10 Cultural Diffusion The spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group to another. During the Islamic Golden Age Muslims learned the game of Polo from the Persians. They refined the rules of the game as it gained popularity (116).

11 Invention The creation of a product or introduction of a process for the 1st time. Ex. “Al-Khawarizimi is best known as the ‘father of algebra.’ In fact, the word algebra comes from the title of one of his books (109).”

12 An improvement to an existing product or process.
Innovation An improvement to an existing product or process. Ex. The Muslims studied medicine of the ancient Greeks, Mesopotamians, and Egyptians. They took what they learned and innovated medicine by doing things like having different wards in hospitals (112).
