(A) Schematic representation of the large ring-like PHB complex composed of alternating PHB1 and PHB2 subunits in the mitochondrial inner membrane (IM). (B) Formation of PHB membrane domains containing defined proteins and membrane lipids. Upper panel: PHB complexes serving as protein scaffolds recruit membrane proteins to specific sites. They form stoichiometric complexes with the m-AAA protease, DNAJC19 and other IM proteins. Lower panel: PHB complexes serving as lipid scaffolds in the IM may define the local lipid composition and create protein-free lipid patches in the IM.
