1
The different parts of the periodic table
2
Key groups Use the previous slide to transfer these to your own copy of the periodic table. Use colours if possible. (5 mins)
3
Objectives 1. to become familiar with the main areas of the periodic table and understand the key features of these groups. 2. To be clear about the physical differences between metals and non metals
4
Outcomes You must be able to explain the key features of your group and be able with the help of others to answer questions about each group.
5
Key terms What is a group? What is a period?
6
Metals vs non metals
7
Opposites attract
8
Features of metals and non-metals
Metal e.g. Silver Ag Metalloid e.g. Antimony Sb Non metal e.g. sulphur S Shiny shiny Dull (yellow) Ductile brittle Brittle Can be hammered to shape malleable Shatters when hammered Good thermal and electrical conductor Semiconductors of electricity Poor conductor good insulator Used in coins, jewelry Harden lead and colour plastics and glass Used in gunpowder, rubber and fungicides High density Moderate density Low density High melting point Moderate melting point Low melting point Some have quite low melting points some are very high Many others are gases
9
Teams 1. Alkali metals 2. Alkali earth metals 3. Transition metals
4. rare earth metals 5. Inert gases 6. halogens 7. metalloids 8. Other non metals
10
Next lesson In Library Research your group and produce quick power point Following lesson print out periodic table notes sheet from website and take notes from each persons presentation
11
Find Out See what you can find out about your group.
Features they have in common, Chemical properties, Physical properties, Uses Sources I will add any facts I consider to be important. Use books or internet. You may go to the library if you need. Make a quick power point presentation ( 3 – 5 slides)
12
Rubric Points features uses sources Physical properties
Chemical properties 1 None 2 One Possibly 3 comprehensive All Yes 4 Well explained clear
13
Plenary 1. Why are alkali and alkali earth metals so named?
2. Iron, gold, mercury and lead are all which kind of metal? 3. Why do the inert gases not react? 4. Name a halogen and it’s use. 5. Where would you find the main gases of the air on the periodic table? 6. Name an element with features of both metals and non metals.
14
Homework Find out about Dmitri Mendeleev and the history of the periodic table: 1. a bit of biographical detail 2. Explain how he organised the elements 3. Explain how his predictions came true. 3. For what else is he remembered in Russia? 4. How is he honoured within the periodic table? (Include at least one piece of visual information and references). Refer to marking rubric
15
Mendeleev rubric Marks Biographical information The periodic table x 2
English Presentation 1 A fact 1 mention Makes little sense Visual information included 2 Some facts Some information OK but many mistakes Visual information explained with captions 3 thorough Explains why it was needed 10 – 20 mistakes References included 4 How he did it > 10 mistakes 5 Proof he was right
