‘Look at the sentence and then explain its function…’ ‘Look at the sentence and then explain why it is important to the structure of the writer’s argument…’ The sentence provides a link to the previous paragraph and sums up the writer’s support of Facebook.

It sums up what being discussed in relation to shopping and then asks a question which the writer goes on to answer in this paragraph. BE AWARE – if the sentence begins with BUT, HOWEVER, YET… The use of but signals a change in the writer’s argument. He moves from a position of supporting William and Kate’s media profile to questioning their motivations.

Effective conclusion questions Always select a specific feature of the conclusion and relate it to a relevant feature from earlier in the passage. ‘the key to Cowell’s success’ highlighted in the conclusion links to the focus of the passage. ‘ritual’ repeats a significant word used earlier in the passage. ‘precious peanuts’ is humorous and the writer has used amusing examples in paragraph 2.

Structure Questions This is HOW you should answer a structure type question. The repeated pattern used by the writer ‘We must..’ conveys their passion about helping the homeless and reinforces that there is collective responsibility. The repeated use of ‘and’ displays a child-like quality and reinforces their enthusiasm. Parenthesis ‘the reduction in journey time’ is used to highlight the benefits of air travel. The antithesis used, which begins by identifying the benefits of exercise, gains greater impact with the negative thrust of the negative conclusion. The rhetorical question ‘who doesn’t?’ is used to justify his argument in relation to reality television.

The writer uses the repetition of ‘any’ to reinforce the extent of sacrifice that they are willing to make in pursuit of freedom.

How to answer Markers appreciate a clear layout. Indicate what you are going to use: Imagery ‘temple’ a temple is a place of worship where people show their utmost respect (ROOT). In the passage the writer feels that libraries deserve a high level of admiration because of the vast amount of knowledge they have available. Word choice The use of the word ‘obscene’ conveys the writer’s extreme distaste for the government’s approach to the obesity epidemic. MARKS DEPEND ON THE QUALITY OF THE COMMENT
