3. What is ceramic glaze?
Glaze is used for decorating, coloring, & water proofing
Glaze is a coating of powdered mix that fuses with the pottery during the firing process
Silica is the main glass former in ceramic glazes
Glaze is used for decorating, coloring, and waterproofing ceramics
Glaze is A coating of powdered glass mix that fuses with the pottery during firing.
Glazes need a ceramic flux which functions by promoting the liquidfication in the clay bodies
These fluxes lower the high melting points of glass formers like silica.
Raw materials of glazes usually include silica as the main glass former.

Underglaze
Gloss glaze
Colorburst glaze
Salt glaze
There are 5 important groups of ceramic glazes. The ones that we use are made of a more modern chemical make up that do not fall into the traditional categories. These are our:
underglaze. This is a glaze that you can use on raw clay (clay that is bone dry and not fired)
Gloss glaze. Usually dinner ware safe depending on the temperature reached
Colorburst glaze usually NOT dinnerware safe regardless of the temperature reached
Salt glaze/horse hair glaze
Some of the things you can glaze are green ware and porcelain

5. Kiln

The earliest known dates to around 6000 BC and was found in modern Iraq, these kilns were used to fuse glass, ceramic pieces, melting metal, dry tobacco leaves, creamate, or create charcoal
Modern use of the kiln revolve primarily around ceramics.
Our kiln is an electric kiln which is rich in oxygen and since there is no open flame, this helps aid in the transition of the clay to ceramics.

7. Rules of Glazing Sand Apply glaze Use only 3 layers
DO NOT GLAZE THE BOTTOM
Sand your pot down first to get rid of any sharp edges, unwanted surface bumps, and any odd marks or lines that were made when your pot was still plastic or leather hard
Apply your glaze using any of the 4 methods of application, you can combine methods just like you can apply multiple glazes
Keep your coats of glaze to a minimum of 3 coats or layers
Never glaze the bottom of your pot, glazes work as sealants and will therefore seal your pot to the kiln shelf if it is applied to the bottom
