L.O: to describe how TB can be transmitted to improve literacy skills Starter: True or False? Next to each statement on the worksheet, write whether it is or isn’t a risk factor for spreading TB. For each false statement, think of another disease it relates to.

2 Receiving a blood transfusion from someone with TB
Having an immune system that has been weakened by HIV or other medical conditions Drinking unclean water Consuming unpasteurised milk and cheese Living in poor and/or crowded housing conditions Being in poor health or having a poor diet due to lifestyle and behavioural problems, such as drug abuse, alcoholism or homelessness Being bitten by a mosquito Having lived in, travelled to, or received visitors from parts of the world where TB is still common

4 Transmission of Diseases
1. To demonstrate transmission, you will exchange a small amount of fluid with a classmate by doing the following: a. Place the pipette in your cup and fill it with solution. b. Place your pipette OVER (not in) the cup of the person you are exchanging with and squirt your solution into the other cup. c. Record the name of the person with whom you exchanged fluids in your book. 3. Repeat step 2 with two other students. 4. After you have exchanged fluids with three other classmates, your teacher will place phenolphthalein into your cup. If your cup turns pink, you are infected.
