Case studies of sleep deprived people.

3 Starter Question What’s the longest that you have stayed awake for?

4 Sleep deprivation studies

5 Take notes like this: Peter Tripp Randy Gardner Length of time awake
Symptoms First sleep after the experiment Does this support the Adams and Oswald’s Restoration theory (1983)?

6 Sleep Deprivation New York DJ, Peter Tripp, set a world record for sleep deprivation in 1959. He went for 201 hours (8.4 days) without sleep.

7 Symptoms Eventually, he became psychotic. He searched drawers looking for non-existent money. He became paranoid. He finally claimed he was not Peter Tripp but an imposter.

8 After effects When he finally fell asleep, he slept for 24 hours. The sleep may have made him feel physically normal, but before long his family noticed a change in his personality. He became moody & depressed.

9 It had long lasting consequences
Tripp began to argue with his boss. He became involved in a scandal, and was fired from his job as a famous DJ. He ultimately divorced 4 times. Many people believe that the sleep stunt changed Peter Tripp forever.

10 Micro sleeps By the end his BODY TEMPERATURE and BRAIN WAVE ACTIVITY showed almost no difference to that of a SLEEPING STATE. This suggests he was taking micro sleeps. EEG’s show micro sleep is the same as sleep. Watch ‘Microsleeps whilst driving’

11 Documentary Secrets of sleep - Sleep deprivation - Peter Tripp Pt1 of 2 (8mins 56) Secrets of sleep - Sleep deprivation - Peter Tripp Pt2/2 (5 mins 09)
