CELLULAR RESPIRATION

In the last chapter green plants used ________________ to
AUTOTROPHS ___________ use energy from sunlight or chemicals to make their own food In the last chapter green plants used ________________ to trap energy from __________ and make ______________ PHOTOSYNTHESIS sunlight food (glucose)

PHOTOSYNTHESIS CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Quick Overview Video PHOTOSYNTHESIS ___________ + _________ + ___________ →_______________ + __________ 6 CO2 6 H2O C6H12O6 6O2 CELLULAR RESPIRATION C6H12O6 6 CO2 _____________ + _________ →________ + __________ + __________ 6O2 6 H2O The two equations are exact opposites!
4
Why do cells need cellular respiration?
Recall…Energy stored in glucose cannot be used by the cell Cellular Respiration releases energy in glucose and converts it to ATP, the form of energy that the cell CAN use
5
What kind of organisms do this?
animals plants bacteria fungi ALL ORGANISMS, INCLUDING BACTERIA USE CELLULAR RESPIRATION TO MAKE ATP!
6
TWO TYPES OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Aerobic Respiration Anaerobic Respiration
7
Aerobic Cellular Respiration (WITH Oxygen)
Occurs in the mitochondria Reactants (requires): Glucose (C6H12O6) & Oxygen (O2) Products (makes): Carbon dioxide (CO2) & Water (H2O) & 32 ATP (that’s A LOT!!)
8
This is the carbon dioxide that you breathe out when you exhale!!!
9
Anaerobic Respiration: (WITHOUT Oxygen)
Occurs in the cytoplasm Two steps: glycolysis followed by fermentation But only makes 2 ATP (That’s a little !!)
10
Two types of anaerobic respiration (fermentation)
11
1) Lactic Acid Fermentation
Occurs in muscle cells of animals (& humans) When you exercise and can’t take in oxygen as fast as your muscles need, then your muscle cells produce lactic acid (makes your muscles sore!)
12
2) Alcohol Fermentation
Occurs in yeast and some bacteria Produce alcohol & CO2 when they perform fermentation Causes bread to rise and used to make alcoholic beverages
