1 Online Global Workshop: Panel on Simulation & Game-based Learning Research Oct. 18, 2006
Parvati Dev, PhD Director, SUMMIT Lab Office of Information Resources and Technology Stanford University School of Medicine

2 Virtual Workshop: Background
To develop a community of researchers & educators in simulation-based learning Final workshop in series of 8 First virtual workshop - 50 connections Sites: Australia (3) Canada (2) China (1) India (2) Korea (1) Spain (1) Sweden (2) UK (3) US (35)

3 Technology Marratech - 50 seats reserved. Stanford has a Marratech server Shared PowerPoint with users. Only speakers could use microphone & video. Client is free; Tested with speakers and participants beforehand Ability to remove participants if get bad audio from them.

4 Collaboration Ongoing chat during the conference enabled Parvati, LeRoy, & Pat to get the sense of the audience’s questions and comments and as a result field appropriate questions to the speakers. What did you get out of it? キ Interesting talks. Opportunity to hear from people that you don't have regular opportunities to meet. (N. John) キ good sense of what is going on in this field and what the challenges are (P. Molholt) キ Reflected over my own projects + got new ideas + will probably initiate contacts with 1-2 panelists (N. Zary) キ Interesting new perspectives (W. Dunn) キ Confirmation of existing strategies, reminders of good practices, and eyes opened to emerging trends and technology(B. Waddington) キ Validation for many of many ideas (S. Edgren)  キ An interesting overview about the state-of-the art. (M Florido) キ  Great sense of community, knowledge of where current state of the art is… (J. Heneghan) キ Good information on the issues relating to simulation (R. Horley)

5 Conclusion High level of interaction: listening, chatting, & visual engagement Great way to bring individuals from around the globe together. Liked it - easy to use for the most part.  キ I like the concept of integrating ppt+chat+video キ It is an extremely valuable method to organize workshops, projects meetings for distributed participants. キ I liked the Marratech technology. I liked the interface, and I especially appreciated the chat window as a forum with other participants (as well as a backup when the sound/video was erratic). It was nice to see the panelists on video while their slides were shown on the ‘whiteboard.’ There was some occasional choppiness of sound and video, and there were some technical difficulties, but I felt those were to be expected. キ Liked it - easy to use for the most part.  Liked that I could control the powerpoint slides if I wanted to キ I liked being able to see the presenter and the notes. I enjoyed the ability to ask questions. キ The technology was probably fine but the transmission was garbled, picture digital boxes much of the time, slides slow to load. DESPITE all that,  I knew this was an unbelievable opportunity with fascinating people, all over the world, at the same time. It was phenomenal. I could see into the future and what this kind of technology can do for meetings around the world. In fact, I was going to the web address of Marratech to our president of the international honor society of nursing and suggest we try it out for a meeting in the future. I have been pumped by the content all day long.
