Personal Bible Study Method
Pray 2. Read 3. Ask Questions 4. Make Notes Our goal should always be to set our thoughts, feelings, and opinions aside so we can faithfully discern what God has revealed in the passage you are reading and how that applies to your life

1. PRAY A Prayer from Ephesians 1:
“Heavenly Father, please give me your Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I can come to know you better. Open the eyes of my heart so that I may know the hope that you called me to and the amazing inheritance I have in Christ. May this truth strengthen my faith and help me to rely on your power to live a faithful and fruitful life for your glory and the good of others”

2. READ Read the passage slowly Read the passage multiple times
Write down thoughts or questions that come to mind as you read and make note of words or phrases that God brings to mind Write down other passages of Scripture that relate to the one you are reading

3. ASK QUESTIONS Q1: What does this passage reveal about God’s nature?
Q2: What does this passage reveal about human nature? Q3: Does this passage highlight a particular sin that I need to repent of?

3. ASK QUESTIONS Q4: Are there commands in this passage that I need to obey? Q5: Are there promises in this passage that I need to remember and believe? Q6: How does this passage point me to the truth of Christ and the Gospel?

Genesis 22 (Abraham and Isaac)
Vs. 7-8: Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes, my son?’ Abraham replied. ‘The fire and wood are here,’ Isaac said, ‘but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?’ Abraham answered, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering” John 1:29 – “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Revelation 5 “worthy is the Lamb who was slain…”

Exodus 20 (The Ten Commandments)
1. You shall have not other God’s before me. 2. You shall not make yourself an image… 3. You shall not misuse the name of the LORD. 4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. 5. Exodus 20 (The Ten Commandments)
Matthew 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment” Matthew 5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” The Law is a mirror that reveals our sin to us The Law shows us that we need a Saviour

Daniel 7 (The Son of Man) Daniel 7 “…there before me was one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him… his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed…” Mark 14 “the high priest asked [Jesus], “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Psalm 2 (Honour the Son) Ps. 2 “Therefore, you kings, be wise, be warned you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” John 5:22-23 “the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.”

MAKE NOTES You have a better chance of remembering something you wrote down than something you only hear or read Review your notes a week, month, or year later and remind yourself of what God taught you and how he challenged and encouraged you when you read that passage of Scripture See answered prayer See God’s grace at work in your life
