Brielle Ilagan Character Description Pearl reaction her wanting Dimmesdale to reveal himself and show his love toward her and Hester (Hawthorne 191) After giving his sermon on Election Day the townspeople were amazed and full of tears by his speech, revealing the people have respect for him Arthur Dimmesdale is described as “a striking aspect, wit, a white, lofty, and impending brow, large, brown, melancholy eyes, and mouth” (Hawthorne 62) He committed a sin of adultery with Hester Prynne Stays with Chillingworth as his patient Punishes himself for committing his sin He reveals the scarlet letter to the townspeople He mainly thinks about the townspeople’s reaction to his sin

Role of Dimmesdale Sabrina Lucio
Dimmesdale is a young minister, who had an affair with Hester Prynne. This sin is the reason for his internal conflict with himself, he scourges himself, starves himself, and stays up at the vigilant out of guilt. Dimmesdale is Pearl’s father. Dimmesdale is Hester’s secret lover. Dimmesdale believes he is chillingworth’s patient, but he does not know that chillingworth only wants revenge on him for having an affair with his wife. “ He thus typified the constant introspection wherewith he tortured, but could not purify, himself.” (132 Hawthorne)

Dimmesdale's Confession
Amanda Delgado Dimmesdale chooses to confess his on the election day. He did this because he felt as if that would be the day of his death and traveling to Europe was just a out of reach dream. When Dimmesdale confesses it releases both him and Pearl from a sinful state because they can both claim each other now. “ Pearl kissed his lips. A spell was broken.” A spell was broken for both of them and the guilt of sin has been lift from both of them. Dimmesdale dies after his confession because he was once again pure and able to enter Heaven a graceful man however many people and leaves Pearl and Hester knowing that he loved them. “ save in this murmur that rolled so heavily after the departed spirit.” The citizens saw different things the day of the confession some believed that they saw an A on his chest and others believed that he didn’t. Either way dimmesdale released himself from the guilt and self hatred and died in peace

Conclusions Jacob Torres Symbols- Dimmesdale himself ties to-
The scarlet letter- when Dimmesdale reveals his scarlet letter, he openly accepts his sin and is able to be at ease with himself before he dies. “He is merciful! He hath proved his mercy, most of all, in my afflictions” (Hawthorne 223). scaffold- Dimmesdale does not publicly show his affection to Pearl or Hester Prynne until after he goes to the scaffold and reveal the scarlet letter. Dimmesdale himself ties to- Themes Sin- As a reverend, he commits a mortal sin by having an affair with Hester Prynne, who was already married. Hypocrisy- He is a weak man because he will not accept his fate as a sinner. However, in the end he reveals his sin publicly by revealing the scarlet letter on his chest.
