These cameras allow anyone to view practically anything from anywhere.
What Are They? These cameras allow anyone to view practically anything from anywhere. Connect one of the cameras to an Ethernet or wireless computer network at home, then navigate your browser to a Web site linked to an Internet address assigned to the camera. Systems ran the range from simple configurations allowing parents to check on their children, to 16-camera networks providing multi-point remote surveillance of office buildings.

Cost! Such systems offer the advantage of relative affordability, since they use existing broadband infrastructure. Off-the-shelf software-equipped cameras cost just $200-$300 apiece, said vendors at Computex, most of them smaller firms. More consumer oriented models, such as the Linksys model, can cost even less.

Workplace Monitoring Additional forms of monitoring and surveillance, such as reviewing phone logs or videotaping for security purposes, bring the overall figure on electronic oversight to 82%, up from 67% just two years ago. On average, 88% of companies engaged in any such practices inform their employees of their policies. More than three-quarters of major U.S. firms (77.7%) record and review employee communications and activities on the job, including their phone calls, , Internet connections, and computer files. The figure has doubled since 1997
