1 Basic Introduction to Acrylic Paint Advanced Art

2 What Are Acrylic Paints?
Acrylics Consist of the following: Pigment – the actual color Binder – Acrylic Polymer Emulsion Solvent - Water

3 Characteristics of Acrylics
Adhesive to multiple surfaces Variety of format – pasty and thick to watery and thin; variety of mediums Compatible with many art materials – master of mixed media Waterproof when dry Water based – water clean up Dry Quickly

4 Artist Grade vs. Student Grade
Top of the line paint High Pigment load Little to no fillers Student Grade: Economic paint Much lower pigment load Have added fillers = less permanent and more yellowing More matte when dry

5 Acrylic Techniques Try these techniques in your sketchbook:
A la prima – splatter (thin with water and splatter on paper, pull (thin with water and pull one color into another) and drip (thin with water and allow one color to drip into another) Sgrafitto – two layers of color, one dry and one wet. Wet color on top is scratched to reveal color underneath Hard Edge Painting – mask off a line with masking tape

6 Blending Techniques A la prima – paint and blend colors on surface
Broken Color – Apply raw color in varying tones directly on the surface With a sponge – dab on paint to blend and give a slight texture Dry Brush – dry brush loaded with very little color

7 Staining Mix color with a little water
With a sponge, dab off the majority of paint Using the clean side of the sponge, wipe off as much paint as you can leaving a stain

8 Feathering Apply paint using quick brush strokes
Continue applying paint with quick brush strokes but less and less pressure as the paint dries Swish brush with light strokes to create feathering effect

9 Underpainting Add several layers of various colors of glazes
When using transparent glazes, you can see the underlying color Try using colors in the same color family

10 What is Important to You that is also connected to the World?
Choose a famous person that your feel connected to. What type of connection do you feel? Make it a bigger thing than “He/She is Hot!” Create an acrylic piece that displays that connection. OR Choose a world topic that you feel a strong connection to

11 Use a Acrylic Transfer in Your Piece
Apply a layer of mod podge to the image Allow to dry overnight Submerge the image in water Rub gently with your thumbs to remove the paper from the Medium Set aside the transfer to dry Attach to the surface using mod podge
