2 Description This lesson introduces the meaning and the different kinds of Lyric Poetry. It will help the students to understand the meaning on how to identify a selection using the different kinds of Lyric Poetry.

4 Lyric Poetry Lyric Poetry consists of a poem, such as a sonnet or an ode, that expresses the thoughts and feelings of the poet. The term lyric is now commonly referred to as the words to a song. Lyric poetry does not tell a story which portrays characters and actions. The lyric poet addresses the reader directly, portraying his or her own feeling, state of mind, and perceptions.

5 Kinds of Lyric Poetry Elegy
Is a poem, song or other work of art composed as a lament for someone who has died. An example of an elegy is the “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman.

6 Kinds of Lyric Poetry Ode
Is a lyric poem addressed to a particular subject, typically of elaborate or irregular metrical form of excessive of exalted or enthusiastic emotion. An example of an Ode is the “Ode on a Grecian Urn” by John Keats

7 Kinds of Lyric Poetry Sonnet
Is a fourteen-line poem in iambic pentameter with a carefully patterned rhyme scheme. An example of a Sonnet is the “When I consider How my Light is Spent” by John Milton.

8 Kinds of Sonnet There are two kinds of Sonnets:
>The Italian or Petrarchan Sonnet >The English or Shakespearean Sonnet
