October 20, 2017 Download notes Begin working on Do Now
Have homework (Aerobic Respiration) open on your computer
3
Do Now 10/20/17 Review over your notes on Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration.
4
Puzzling Question What is the process that enables humans and animals to breathe? Cellular Respiration!
5
What is Cellular Respiration?
Process by which glucose and oxygen are converted into water and carbon dioxide. Equation for Cellular Respiration: Glucose + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water +ATP (Reactants) (Products)
6
Where does cellular respiration take place?
In the mitochondria of cells (mostly animal cells)
7
Checks for Understanding
What are the products of cellular respiration? In which organelle does cellular respiration occur? Carbon Dioxide and Water Mitochondria
8
Three Stages of Cellular Respiration
Stage 1: Glycolysis Stage 2: Krebs Cycle Stage 3: Electron Transport Chain
9
Glycolysis Glycolysis- process that splits glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid Forms 2 molecules of ATP
10
Checks for Understanding
What are the three stages of cellular respiration? What happens in glycolysis? Glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, Electron Transport Chain (ETC) Glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid
11
Krebs Cycle Krebs Cycle is also known as the Citric Acid Cycle
Process is described as a series of chemical reactions in which pyruvic acid is broken down into carbon dioxide
12
Checks for Understanding
What is another name for the Krebs Cycle? What happens in the Krebs Cycle? Citric Acid Cycle Reactions in which pyruvic acid is broken down into Carbon Dioxide
13
Electron Transport Chain
High energy electrons travel down the ETC and eventually produce water as a byproduct. This stage produces the most energy with 36 ATP molecules. In total, 38 ATPs are produced during cellular respiration.
14
Checks for Understanding
What happens in the Electron Transport Chain? How many ATP molecules are produced in total during cellular respiration? High energy electrons produce water and ATP. 38 ATP
15
Assignment We will work silently and independently on CODE RED.
Any unfinished classwork will be homework.
