Radioactive Elements Physical Science Chapter 4 Section 5 Pages

Nuclear Processes Fusion: combination of smaller nuclei into larger nuclei. Requires A LOT of energy, and is how synthetic elements are made. Naturally occurs in stars. Particle accelerators are used to create new elements as well as study the ones we know. FISSION: is the splitting of atomic nuclei, which gives off much energy. This process produces a lot of radiation.

History of Discovery How the Earth Formed video Henri Becquerel
Marie and Pierre Curie Full timeline What is Radioactivity? The emission of particles from the nuclei of atoms. This process is called radioactive decay as the nuclei of only SOME elements break down – they actually lose protons that emit other particles. New elements are formed after the decay process

Compare/Contrast Types of Decay using pg 140 & Radioactivity video Make your own notes chart like below. Type of Decay Particle Emitted & its Charge What changes in the atom? Blocking Material Illness that can result

More about Radioactivity
Uses of Radioactive Isotopes or Radioactive Decay - Tracers - Radiation Therapy - Dating of organic & inorganic remains In the Particle Adventure website in section Particle Decay & Annihilation; the whole section is relevant, but difficult!
