Types of Traditional Sentences
Discharges absolute discharge = releasing a convicted offender and erasing the criminal record after one year most lenient sentence – for minor or first-time offences conditional discharge = releasing a convicted offender under certain terms, and erasing the criminal record after three years if the terms are met if terms are not met, discharge is revoked and more severe sentence is adminstered

Probation = sentence that allows a person to live in the community under the supervision of a parole officer might be in addition to, or instead of a prison sentence typically have numerous attached conditions – these three are compulsory: keep the peace and demonstrate good behavior appear in Court when required notify Court or probation officer of any change of name, address, or employment

suspended sentence = a judgment that is not carried out, providing certain requirements are met

intermittent sentence = sentence served on weekends and at night sentences of <90 days offenders must be non-violent, have jobs, have dependents conditional sentence = prison sentence that can be served in the community with strict terms attached sentences <2 years very strict terms attached

electronic monitoring = allowing an offender to serve a sentence at home under electronic supervision from a remote condition binding over = a sentence he defendant to keep the peace and demonstrate good behavior for up to 12 months deportation = a sentence of expulsion from the country fines = specific amounts of money paid as penalties for offences

suspension of privileges = a sentence that withholds a privilege for a specified period or a lifetime plea bargaining = a negotiated deal whereby the accused pleads guilty in exchange for a lighter sentence

incarceration = imprisonment for a specified period of time Sentences <2 years served in provincial facility, >2 years in federal facility dangerous offender = someone who constitutes a threat to the life, safety, or well-being of others indeterminate sentence = a sentence for an indefinite period of time concurrent sentences = sentences served at the same time consecutive sentences = sentences served one after another

Restorative Justice Programs
focuses on ‘joint problem-solving’ unites victims, offenders, and community opportunity for offenders to assume accountability and give opportunity to make amends victim-offender mediation = an alternative measures program designed to determine restitution; involves the victim, the offender, and a mediator

family group conferencing = an alternative measures program in which the victim and the offender meet with family members and other concerned parties to determine restitution involves family members, community support groups, police officers, social welfare officials, and lawyers use only when offender admits guilt may be ended at any time by offender – return case to Court

victim-offender panels = moderated discussions that allow victims and offenders linked by a common crime, to express the feelings about the offence victim impact panel = a panel that allows victims and drunk driving offenders to express their views and feelings aboriginal sentencing circle = an alternative measures program that involves a process of healing for both the victim and the offender
