9 Training delivery - Improving Standards - National Interventions
With funding support from CITB and data from NHBC, we continue to support the industry during 2019 to improve quality in key areas within brickwork/cavities to the following audiences - ‘Make a difference’ Bricklayers – on site 250 sessions ( bricklayers) Site / Assistant Managers – Defects Prevention (already started) FE Trainers – Regional?

10 FE Trainers in Colleges
CPD training by for educators on the big industry challenges, but also drawing in manufactures to help supply materials that can be used within lessons. Mar-May 2019 5-10 workshops External wall focus

11 Bricklaying Diploma Students – Employer Expectation
Findings - Instead of expected 3-6 month induction/settling in period on site it is closer to months due to: • A lack of understanding by students of up to date site practices • Little site experience or understanding of the requirements of working on a productive site • A lack of engagement with day to day working patterns • Lack of some of the most basic skills such as working to line and level • Training environment - lack of context, scale and unrealistic settings/surroundings • Students lack confidence to apply themselves which leads to employers not having the confidence to allow them • Lack of continuous/sustained practical work so students understand the physical requirements of work on site.

12 To think about……………. How we can improve the number of FE students entering the trade they trained for? Sharing Skills Frameworks with all Construction Departments Regional interventions for FE trainers – how/who/where? CITB brickwork Academies / curriculum More intensive practical training i.e. longer periods on the trowel over a sustained period. Providing more realistic site like conditions or more site visits. Concentrating on key basic skills such as laying to a line to build confidence and make them more productive on site. Incorporating modern ways of working especially around key areas such as fire stopping, cavity trays, and working to timber frames. How employers can practically help.
