What Is Yoga Therapy ? Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the informed application of the teachings and practices of Yoga. Yoga therapists prescribe specific regimens of postures, breathing exercises, meditation, lifestyle changes and relaxation techniques to suit individual needs in the lineage of study. (ex. Questions to ask/Considerations Have you practiced or considered practicing yoga? Why or Why Not? What do you like about yoga? What concerns do you have? What type of yoga are your practicing? Describe the class to me? The environment? Tell me about your practice? What do you notice prior, during and after a practice? I have noticed this, have you? Why are you practicing yoga? What’s your intention? Generate ideas for ways to incorporate yoga in daily life to support treatment goals ? Do you have a yoga therapist? Is he or she taking a class that best meets their current needs? Is there a helpful intention, mantra or quote from yoga that could be used for nutrition interventions? Can a yoga experience relate to an experience with food, body, shape, exercise, emotion? Hydration- before, during and after a class? Are they adapting postures as needed or ignoring their body? Does the studio have mirrors? How is this affecting their body image and perception? What type of messages are being integrated into the class (weight focused, appearance, competition vs. acceptance, adaptation, modification)?
