3. Structure of a debate Motion: ‘This house believes that
Social Networking is a good advancement in modern technology’
Proposing team -
Agree with & argue FOR the motion
Opposing team –
Disagree with & argue AGAINST the motion
The Chair directs the debate & acts as referee - They make sure both sides have equal time to speak.

4. The role of the Chair person
The Chair person will open the debate, make a short comment between each part & between each team member’s argument.
The Chair person will be marked on how well they keep the debate flowing, ensuring it’s balanced, and by encouraging involvement by all parties.
The Chair opens the debate by reading the motion & inviting the 1st Opposing team member to speak. After the opposing team member has spoken, the Chair invites the next person to speak, drawing on the main point from the argument .

5. This ‘back & forth’ control of the Chair continues until the end.
After both parties closing comments, the Chair may invite questions from the audience & take a vote from the audience to decide which team has won.

6. Rebuttal – Means explaining why 1 team disagrees with another team.
The debate will be interactive and have the following 5 parts

Proposing team’s response to rebuttal
Part 2
Opposing team: argument 1
Proposing team’s rebuttal

7. Part 3
Proposing team: argument 2
