2 Figure 1 Representative samples of the immunostaining for E-cadherin, N-cadherin, and CD44 in the endometrium of control patients (A–F) and infertile patients with hydrosalpinges (G–L). In the two patient groups, both secretory (A–C, G–I) and proliferative (D–F, J–L) endometrium are depicted. Strong and continous E-cadherin expression was observed at the lateral and apical membranes of epithelial cells lining both glands and the luminal surface of the endometrium in control subjects at both proliferative and secretory phases (A, D). In infertile patients with hydrosalpinges (G, J), E-cadherin expression was considerably reduced, with low expression of scarce endometrial cells. N-Cadherin was most often not detected regardless of the phase of the cycle or the patient group (B, E, H, K). CD44 immunostaining was observed in secretory endometrium only (C, I), at the basal and lateral poles of the endometrial cells, without detectable changes in infertile patients (I, L) and control subjects (C, F).
