1 Public Speaking

2 What is the difference between hearing and listening?

3 . Listening takes more effort than hearing.
Pay attention, stay focused, think about the speaker’s ideas

4 Good listeners think about what the speaker is saying
pay attention to the speaker’s tone of voice, gestures, and facial expressions. Interrupt only when necessary to ask questions.

5 Good speakers get people to listen to them! Think about what you think your listeners want to hear. Pretend the audience is made up of your sweet, elderly great-grandparents who are eager to hear your speech and small children who look up to you and are learning about this famous person for the first time. Pretend you are a news reporter on TV relaying important information – be enthusiastic, engaging and informative.

6 Practice, practice, practice!
You should practice presenting your PowerPoint. Review the rubric. Be prepared on the day you present. Know your topic! Create note cards to help you stay on topic and organized. On the day of your presentation you must submit the Research Project Rubric to me.

7 During your presentation you will do the following:
1. BREATHE! 2. Keep your shoulders back. 3. Be yourself. 4. Hook your listeners in! Open with a question or surprising fact! 5. Articulate and project your words - speak clearly and distinctly. NOT FAST. 6. DO NOT MISPRONOUNCE WORDS – ESPECIALLY THE PERSON’S NAME! 7. DO NOT MUMBLE. Speak loud enough so people in back can hear you.

8 And….. 8. Do not say like, um, ah.
9. Stand up straight and be confident. 10. Maintain good eye contact. Look around the room. 11. Emphasize your main ideas by changing the tone and volume of your voice. 12. Use facial expressions and simple hand gestures. 13. Stick to your topic. 14. Avoid repeating.

9 Don’t be nervous! Nobody is perfect and everyone has to have a turn!
