Public High School Education increased as well, replacing private high school education College education also increased for all. Separate universities for white males, white women, black men and black women were set up Booker T Washington- Education for blacks 44% of non- whites in the south were illiterate Tuskegee Institute- First started as a trade school, then led to education

4 W.E.B. Du Bois First partially black man to receive his Ph.D from Harvard Founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Demanded equal rights for all blacks, on all levels: politically, educationally, economically and socially

6 The Press The printed word remained a major source of education and enjoyment for Americans Library’s were popular hotspots for Americans Newspapers offering daily news and interesting stories were also popular Topics such as sex, scandal, human interest stories sprang into the headlines Joseph Pulitzer, and William Hearst were two newspaper tycoons

7 The Press Pulitzer began to put colored comics into his newspapers to supplement the reading Yellow Journalism: No legitimate or researched news, just great headlines and juicy stories Magazines slowly became another form of entertainment for Americans

Books and poems became a little more scandalous, about everyday life than many Americans could relate to

9 New Morality and Women’s Independence
As women began to infiltrate the working class of America they slowly became more independent New Morality became apparent: high divorce rates, birth control, frank discussions about sexual topics Women would now spend free nights after work at dance halls and bars
