Economic Tourism The idea behind economic tourism is to aid in the economic growth of a particular region. The whole idea behind it is to bring in a lot of $money$ The most significant form of tourism that supports economic growth is recreational tourism – because it is a form of mass tourism, attracting millions of people/year.
3
Florida Mass tourism destinations include: Disney Universal Studios
Magic Kingdon Epcot South Beach Golf Resorts
4
The Economy of Florida During the 1980’s jobs increased by 24% due to tourism and migration of retirees Service industries account for 4/5 of Florida’s GSP ) gross state product) Construction and communication industries also benefit from tourism = multiplier effect What is the multiplier effect?
5
The Multiplier Effect The idea that the total economy is affected because of the expansion within the tourism industry. Brings us back to direct employment vs. indirect (spin-off) employment. For example, when a theme park opens there are plenty of jobs created directly related (performers, concessions stands, front desk personnel etc) These jobs then create more jobs! (Costume designers, choreographers, engineers, dry cleaners, food suppliers …)
