LO: How to use language to communicate Starter: Doing chatting
Christopher finds it difficult to ‘do chatting.’ He describes chatting as ‘where people say things to each other which aren’t questions and answers and aren’t connected.’ In this chapter one of Christopher’s neighbours tries to chat to him. Highlight the parts of Christopher’s chat with Mrs Alexander that are different from to how you would respond. Talk to a partner: Why does Christopher find ‘doing chatting’ so difficult? Challenge: What would you have said to Mrs Alexander that would be different to what Christopher said?

Christopher’s observational skills
Look at the extracts from Chapter 67. What do you notice about Christopher’s descriptions and observational skills? How many different senses are used in the descriptions? What effect does this have on the reader? Challenge: What is included and what is left out of his descriptions of people? Why is this?

Homework: Giving chatting advice- writing task
Imagine Christopher writes to a problem page asking for advice on how to chat to people Write a reply from the Agony Aunt/Uncle, giving advice on how to have a conversation Remember that Christopher will need to have detailed and clear instructions Your reply should show an understanding of why Christopher finds chatting difficult Shared area/ curriculum/
