Warm-up: What things do you have to remember in order to be successful on SAQ questions and on an LEQ essay? Objective: Examine and Review how to successfully write for the APUSH exam to prepare for DBQ Writing on the AP Exam.

The Introductory Paragraph The “Top Bun” of your essay! 4-6 sentences

5 The Introductory Paragraph
Establish TIME & PLACE. This is Contextualization. Be SPECIFIC Create a clear, THESIS STATEMENT Answer the question. List the SUB-TOPICS or categories you will use to support your thesis statement. Focus on the question at hand—do NOT begin with a “flowery” or “cheesy” sentence! Never “ I am going to write about…” Or … “for many reasons”!!! No “laundry list!”

6 Thesis The thesis of your essay will be the answer to the question you have constructed. It can be more than one sentence, AND it must include WHY that is the answer to the question. Your answer (thesis) should take into account all sides of the issue. Stronger essays show analysis of the issue from different perspectives. Remember, every single sentence of your essay should support your thesis.

7 Contextualization: The response must relate the topic of the prompt to broader historical events, developments, or processes that occur before, during, or continue after the time frame of the question. This point is not awarded for merely a phrase or a reference. SO BE SPECIFIC!

Make the 1st sentence of each paragraph your Topic Sentence. (~paragraph thesis) Include the documents that are relevant to support the ideas in the paragraph. Use ALL of the documents given. Bring in supportive outside information. This is critical!! * o.i.’s = “outside information” Every sentence you write should have something to do with the Thesis which is the answer to the question.

Use of Documents: Accurately DESCRIBES the content of at least FOUR documents to address the topic of the prompt. Quotes are NOT sufficient enough. SUPPORTS an argument in response to the prompt using at least SIX documents. Use the Documents to prove your point For at least Four documents, EXPLAINS HOW or WHY the document’s point of view, purpose, historical situation, and/or audience is relevant to an argument. (H.A.P.P.Y)

Questions to Ask Yourself About the Documents Attribution  Who is this person? Why might they be significant? What is the point of view (POV) of the author? How reliable and accurate is the source? What is the tone or intent of the document author? What other information does this document call to mind? Use all available clues. Remember, docs. can be used in a variety of ways!

15 The Concluding” Paragraph
Start with a “concluding phrase.” Restate your thesis statement a bit differently. Put your essay answer in a larger historical perspective. End of some trend/movement/idea, etc. Beginning of some trend/movement/idea End of one & beginning of another. Do NOT end on the note that this is the reason we are where we are today!
